Internet Safety Assignment Reflection

  1. What article did you choose to read for your article of choice?

For my article, I chose to read, The Savior is Counting on You by Joe J. Christensen. This article was addressed to Aaronic priesthood holders, but I found it very applicable to me as well. I loved how he said we can’t roll around in the mud without getting dirty. I think that’s a great reminder for us, as well as a way to teach children or youth about avoiding rudeness in social networking and to avoid inappropriate things online.

  1. Describe the video resources you watched.

I watched a couple of the Netsmartz videos. One was “Tracking Teresa,” which took the viewer through finding as much information about a girl from a chat room as possible in a matter of minutes. In less than half an hour, her home address, phone number, school, and family members’ names had been located. Another video I watched was “Keisha’s Crime.” It showed how a girl used her computer to post a nasty picture of another girl she was mad at over a boy. The last one I watched was “Angela’s Experience,” which showed how to handle a web harasser. She ended up telling a parent, who called the police. I watched the Faux Paws video, which showed how Faux Paw (or any child) can be lured into a chat room conversation by a person assuming a false identity and then get into trouble by agreeing to meet them. I listened to the Internet Safety Podcast interview with Prof. Michael Quinn. Dr. Quinn wrote a book about technology ethics, and discussed some of the pros and cons that have come with the internet. He talked about the social dangers the internet has for children. Children become isolated from others when the engage too much in gaming and social networking. He talked about the need for children to be children, and not to have kids use technology at a very young age, because it can be detrimental to their growth as a person.

  1. Write a paragraph describing what your most important "take-aways" were from the readings and video?

From the videos, I was most struck by how much people can find out about you from just a tiny bit of information listed online. I also noticed that it is easy for kids to get into trouble when there are no limits or guidelines for computer use. Some of the problems shown on the Netsmartz videos could have been avoided by parents limiting and monitoring computer use. I found the Internet Safety Podcast very interesting, and agree with the idea that it’s important not to start kids on laptops and cell phones too early. I found their comments about how the internet has changed children’s and young adults’ interactions with each other very true. Too much internet use, even if the child is not engaged in dangerous activities, is detrimental to social development.

From Elder Ballard’s talk, I really liked the list of actions we can take to decrease bad media influences in our families. He had very specific ideas, which I think will be helpful now and in my future family. This was the second time I have listened to Elder Bednar’s talk, and I was as impressed by it this time as I was the first time. It was a really good talk to get me thinking about how to improve my own life. I love how direct he is. In the provident living article, I really liked the counsel to use the internet for specific purposes, and not just for surfing. I think this is very important, and can help not only with avoiding evil, but also with just not wasting time. In Bro. Graham’s article, I like how he pointed out that we can’t cut children off from technology. Instead, we must show them the positive ways to use it, which means we must be educated about technology ourselves as teachers and parents.

I shared my findings with my dad, who is junior high school teacher. He was very interested in what I learned in the podcast, and was familiar with the church talks I had read. He was very interested in Elder Bednar’s talk, since it was for young adults and he had not heard the entire talk before. My dad was able to share a bit with me about his own experiences with technology and his students. He said that text messaging is a huge distraction at school, and that he finds his students are too linked to technology to concentrate a lot of the time. I was surprised to hear him say that whatever is prevalent in society works its way into the classroom and must be addressed there. I had not thought about that before, but it makes a lot of sense. Teachers have to address all the nasty things that come with new advancements. He mentioned that the issues he dealt with early in his career are nothing like what he has to worry about now. Many of his students are into very dangerous things because they have free rein of the internet, texting, and cell phones. It is scary that kids can get internet through phones now. He emphasized that even when they get into junior high and high school, kids should not have free rein of the internet and other technologies. There must be guidelines and limits for protection. My dad mostly knew about the resources I shared, with the exception of some of the internet video resources. He was interested in the online videos through UEN, and was excited that I found Faux Paws (he’d heard about this, but hadn’t actually accessed it before). My information mostly was a reminder to him and a supplement to his own resources.



I completed the course evaluation, course survey, and checked my grades.

PLE Week 10

The most important thing I learned from the videos was that technology can be used with very young children. I was surprised that the teacher in the spider lesson used the digital camera and web page to teach about spiders, because it seemed to me that young children would get bored quickly because of the technical aspect. However, the students seemed to be really excited about taking the pictures of their spiders and communicating with another class. The neat thing about the web page is that it allowed both teachers instant access to each other’s findings, rather than having to wait to reply through regular mail or even email. Attaching pictures to email takes a long time to do and open, but putting pictures on a web page is fast on both ends. In the Brown Bear lesson, I was surprised that kindergarten students were using the computer themselves to draw pictures. I think that is an excellent way to help children become comfortable using computers, as well as a good way to help students improve hand-eye coordination. I was also impressed with how much using computers helped non-English speaking students. English language learners can get the experience using computers without needing English, and this might be the most successful learning experience and feeling they have all day. It was also interesting to see the difference in ages using technology. In the kindergarten class, the teacher sat next to the student drawing on the computer. In the third grade class, the teacher was able to have the students work in small groups to complete the computer drawing. However, students in both grades were able to use the computers to draw, even the four and five year olds. I thought it was a really good idea to have the third graders use the favorites tab on the internet browser to help students access specific web pages. This kept the students from accessing sites where they might run into questionable content, and also helped the teacher and students obey copyright laws, since they knew exactly where the student had accessed material from.

PLE Week 9

The second grade classroom I am working in does not have a lot of technology. The teacher has and uses regularly an overhead projector. She does not have her own computer projector. There are two computers in the classroom, but neither one is functional, so they are not used. The teacher does have her own laptop and access to wireless internet in the classroom, so that could be useful for when she is able to borrow a computer projector to show the students something. The students are able use the computer lab once a week during scheduled time. One neat thing is that the school has televised announcements. Fifth and sixth graders take turns being news casters, microphone managers, cameramen, etc. each morning as they present the announcements to the school. Each class is able to watch these announcements in their rooms. My class, however, does not get to work with technology a whole lot (as far as I have seen), except for during their weekly scheduled lab time. I think there is a lot of technology that could be used to enhance learning in the classroom, such as GoogleEarth, digital probes, projected images, Stellarium, short video clips, etc. Whether or not the teacher can get access to these is the hard part.
I completed the midcourse evaluation and informed consent.

PLE Week 8

I viewed and commented on Kaitlin Tingey's Stellarium project viewing the phases of the moon, Lauryn Paul's pH project, and Kellie Cash's Stellarium project tracking moon's orbit around Earth. I was impressed with the variety of projects everyone came up with. I hadn't thought about the other ideas possible.

I really like the idea of using digital microscopes in the classroom. I remember that I had a difficult time using microscopes in elementary school because i was nervous about breaking the slides and lens. Digital microscopes take that pressure away, and allow students to view objects of all sizes, not just slides. Also, the entire class can view the object through the microscope at the same time because the live image can be projected. I think students get excited about using neat gadgets like digital probes and microscopes, as well, so it's a great way to make science exciting and hands-on. I also love Stellarium. I took an astronomy class that used a similar program, and I find it fascinating. I think kids would have so much fun watching the constellations, moon, and other objects "move" across the sky. It really makes space and astronomy accessible to children, because kids are not going to have the time or opportunity to sit outside at night and observe through a telescope. It also helps put the orbit of the Earth into context because kids can actually see it happening in fast motion.

PLE Week 7

Description: For my science activity, sixth graders will use Stellarium to view seasonal constellations. Students will hypothesize whether or not the night sky changes during the course of a year. Students will look at the night sky as it appears from Utah during the four different seasons. Students will look at the constellations visible in April, July, October, and December and determine if the constellations visible are the same or different for each season. Students will also look at the night sky as it appears in the late evening and early morning on one day during each season to determine if different constellations are visible at different times of the night. Students will then use their observations to analyze why different constellations are visible during each season, and why constellations “rise” and “set” during the night.
Content: This science activity meets the sixth grade science core Standard 4: Students will understand the scale of size, distance between objects, movement, and apparent motion (due to Earth's rotation) of objects in the universe and how cultures have understood, related to and used these objects in the night sky; Objective 2 a & d: Locate and identify stars that are grouped in patterns in the night sky. Relate the seasonal change in the appearance of the night sky to Earth's position.
Students will learn that the constellations that are visible in the late evening are different from those visible in the early morning. This is because the Earth rotates on its axis. As Earth rotates through one full day, we see different parts of the sky throughout the day and night. In the evening, we see several constellations. However, as we rotate during the night, we see different constellations because our part of Earth is facing toward another part of the sky. Throughout a season, we will see the same group of constellations “rise” and “set” during the night. As earth makes its orbit, or revolves, around the sun, the position of Earth in the night sky changes. This means that we see a different part of Earth’s orbital path during each season. For instance, during winter, Earth is in the part of the night sky that contains the constellations Orion and Taurus. Because of Earth’s rotation (one full day), we will see Orion and Taurus during different times of the night, but we will see both throughout the winter because of Earth’s orbital position around the sun. Some constellations are circumpolar, meaning they are visible in all seasons because of their position in the sky. These include the Big and Little Dippers, and Cassiopeia. Circumpolar constellations, as well as the North Star, could be discussed in a separate lesson and activity.
Pedagogy: Students will be constructing hypotheses, observing and collecting data, and analyzing data. Students will develop a hypothesis to the question: “Does the night sky change during the year?” and test their prediction by looking at the constellations during each of the four seasons using Stellarium. After observing that the sky does change, students will analyze their observations on Stellarium to determine what might cause this change. From the Content Standard for Science as Inquiry handout, students will “develop descriptions, explanations, predictions and models using evidence,” and “think critically and logically to make the relationships between evidence and explanations.” Since constellations are visible, students can collect data that either supports or refutes their hypotheses, and use concepts of rotation and revolution to analyze and explain the results.
Technology: Using Stellarium to view changes in the night sky over the course of the year is a good fit with learning about the different constellations and relating the seasonal change in the appearance of the night sky to Earth's position. It would be very difficult to send students home with an assignment to watch how the constellation positions change over the course of a night and a year. The students would have a difficult time remembering such an extended assignment, and the teacher would find it a hassle to remind students over that many months. Stellarium allows students to observe the constellations as they appear from Utah, and to see how the constellations that are visible from the Northern Hemisphere change during the night and over the course of a year. Students can gather the observations in a matter of minutes, rather than months, and deduce that it is Earth, not the night sky, that is rotating (which means we see different constellations in the late evening than we do in the early morning) and revolving (which means we see a different part of the night sky, and hence different constellations, during each season, depending on where we are in our orbit around the sun).

PLE Week 6

I watched Google Earth tours by Lauryn Paul, Kellie Cash, and Kaitlin Tingey. I discovered lots of things in their tours that I didn't even think of using!

When using a Google Earth tour in the classroom, I think a teacher could run into several challenges. First, unless the teacher runs the tour while the class watches, I think students would have a really difficult time figuring out how to turn on layers, use the measurement tool, etc. Unless I was doing the tour for fifth or sixth graders, I think I would definitely run it and have the class watch. Also, it is sometimes hard to see the features on Google Earth. The landscape often looks like mush, unless you zoom out far away. I think children might easily loose interest if the teacher takes time to figure out where the best view is. This is why it's important to have every marker posted before hand. Other than that, however, I think Google Earth is a great way to take a field trip without spending money or leaving school. I find it really fascinating to watch the world spin and zoom into different places, view the panorama pictures, and look at distance relationships. I think children would find this interesting, too, especially if the teacher is doing the technical work so that they can enjoy the view. This is a great way to learn about the world.

Google Earth Tour Table

The 7 Natural Wonders of the World
: In this Google Earth activity, students will tour the 7 Natural Wonders of the World and determine which ecosystem each wonder fits in. Students will have already learned about different ecosystems. They are to guess what ecosystem they think the wonder might fit in. The class would later discuss.

Using a Google Earth Tour to apply learning about ecosystems to actual places is a good approach because students get to actually see the places talked about. They watch the globe turn, so they are observing where different places are on earth. Students see the variety of places on earth that contain different ecosystems. Students would be drawn into the activity because it is interactive and contains visuals. Students can also play around with different views using the arrows and directional scrolls, which is engaging and encourages curiosity.

Movie Making in the Elementary Classroom

I enjoyed watching the videos by Leah Garrett, Lauryn Paul, Kellie Cash, Kaitlin Tingey, Mariah James, and Daren Parker. All of them were really well done.
When implementing digital story telling projects in the classroom, I think there could be several challenges. First, not all students are comfortable using computers. If a student clicks on the wrong thing, the teacher has to figure out what he or she did and try to save the story from being lost. Also, making a video would take a lot of time, either in the classroom or as homework. If it was sent home to be worked on, some students might not have siblings or parents who could help them gather pictures, music, and a storyline. Students with technologically inclined parents or families would have a real advantage. If the story was done in class, a lot of instruction time would be lost. An alternative would be to do one story as an entire class. Each student could be in charge of one scene in the story. The student could find the picture and narrate his or her page. This would speed the process up, and also give students the opportunity to still use the technology.

This is my Photostory video. It meets the 2nd grade Core Science Standard 3, Objective 1c: create pictures and stories about real animals and compare to make believe stories about animals. It also meets Language Arts Standard 8 Objective 6: Write in different modes and genres (journal writing).

TPACK

TPACK stands for Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge. TPACK is using technology to teach a specific content area accurately using effective teaching strategies and management practices (pedagogy). To teach using technology, a teacher must implement the other two aspects of TPACK, pedagogy and content knowledge. The teacher must know how to manage the class and have strategies to teach. The teacher must also have solid knowledge of the topic he or she is teaching. When pedagogy and content knowledge are present, then the teacher can use technology to enhance the teaching/learning process. Teachers must be aware that using technology alone is ineffective when it is not combined with good pedagogical practices and content knowledge.

Week 2 PLE

The most useful thing I learned this week from the internet communications project was how to embed different documents. I never even knew Google calendar and documents existed. I also had no idea how to embed photos, pictures, and videos on a web page either. Actually, everything I learned in this assignment was useful, because I did not know how to create a webpage, use a webcam, or edit photos online. I didn't know what Blogster was either. I learned so much this week, and I am really excited about all the neat things I can do now. I have lots of options for fun things I can do using computers in my class and on my future class website that I wouldn't have even known to try before this assignment.

My Technology Experience

My technology experience is not extensive. I can perform all the functions on a computer I need to in order to perform in classes and stay in touch with others, but I don't spend a lot of time figuring things out on the computer and discovering how to use new programs. I can use the basic computer programs, but I could certainly become a lot more technologically saavy.
